The long awaited “Black Rock Shooter OVA” finally came and it did not disappoint. The waiting was worth it and we were lead into a different universe where friendships sometimes turn into something wonderful or can be just be lethal.  So far the story has not revealed to us why everything is happening or at least explaining what is the reason for the Black Rock Shooter to exist.  But what we were left with was an introduction to the friendship between Yumi (Yomi) and Moto and the Yuu.

Yumi (Yomi) is the classical rich school girl that is spoiled by her parents and has always been moving around the world and never stays that long in one place.

Moto like sports and is an “ace player” on the basketball team. She befriends Yumi (Yomi) during the first day of school and they become good friends.

Yuu is the manager of the basketball team where Yumi (Yomi) plays and becomes close friend to Moto as they enter the second year, because they are in the same classroom.

Anyways, without going into spoiling the episode for all of you some complications happen and Yumi (Yomi) is missing and Moto feels like she is responsible for what happened.  She messages Yumi (Yomi) tirelessly and then she gets an empty text message with just Yumi’s (Yomi) name as the sender and Moto rushes to where she thinks she is. This is where it gets interesting and we learn a bit about the whole ordeal of the “Black Rock Shooter” that we had been bombarded since the opening of the Anime.

Black Rock Shooter OVA leaves us with many questions and I am sure answers will come in future episodes and understand why things happened in the first place. Whatever the reason is, it is surely fun to watch the fights take place in a futuristic setting and with some awesome weapons crashing against each other. I personally wanted to watch more fights and a little more action, but I guess we will see much more of that in future episodes.

Here are a few Screeshots from Black Rock Shooter OVA Episode 1

Taiga is Emma 2.0

First I would like to say that it is an usual approach I took to do this reaction paper and instead of watching the straight up versions of Emma or that relate to the novel in a direct way I took another way around it and investigated some new stuff that is coming out that is scary similar to that of Emma’s novel.  I guess this matchmaking and stuff that happens around it has always been part in some way of how modern society works. Anime is often seen as something that is shallow and just meant for kids and that it cannot be deep enough to portray mature and concrete actions. Anyways, I could go on for hours talking about it and would not serve that much the purpose of the paper and honestly I think Anime is just another medium to express an idea and to portray a deep story; just like a movie or a novel tries to do.  With that say let’s get on with what this reaction paper is about; I will be focusing on Jane Austen’s Emma and Toradora! . Just like Emma, Taiga is the main character in Toradora! And she faces many of the many challenges that Emma encounters during the novel.  They also have similar life styles and their quest for perfection always gets them in trouble.

Taiga Aisaka is the matchmaker in Toradora! And she is always in her constant quest to match Ryu Takasu with Minori.  Ryu Takasu is her best friend and confidant that is always for her no matter what and her partner in her many pranks.  When Ryu tells Taiga that he likes Minori she goes all out to make the match work and along the way she makes many unsuccessful attempts to get them together, but she fails every time.  Taiga tells Ryu that she likes the class president, Yusaka Kitamura, and they make the promise that they will help each other out but they fail once again.  Just as Emma, went to many failures of trying to make matches for her friends.

The way Taiga and Emma connect to each other is interesting, since they both fail at the matchmaking business and even if their hearts are in the right place they still fail to bring together two completely different people together I would say.  We can see how Emma pushes too hard for Harriet and Mr.  Elton. Mr. Elton likes Emma and she is incompletely ignorant of this, and when she goes too far she is hit in the face when he confesses to her.  It is similar to Taiga and Ryu, when Ryu during Christmas Eve tells Taiga that he loves her, but she just ignores him because she thinks she has stolen him away from Minori. Andrew pointed in his post: Andrew Funimation rants that he was pissed because NAVARRE Corporation might cut FUNIMATION off, here is one of his statements:

Now I don’t know if you are outraged by this or not but in all honesty, I am F******* P***** off by this. Now as most of you guys know, Funimation is one of the most popular anime distribution companies that has survived the tough times of the recession. Personally, I am absolutely upset by what Navarre is doing. This has to be one of the biggest mistakes that a huge corporation like Navarre could make. Navarre has plans to release more details during their end of the fiscal year conference call this Friday.

I don’t know about you guys, but honestly FUNIMATION can go to hell and they deserve it for their lousy dubs and subs and greedy practices. Maybe Andrew is a vivid fan of dubs or something that see that if Funimation was go off business was going to destroy their world of Anime. I am sure if FUNIMATION goes there are many companies that can be doing a much better job with Anime and giving it the respect it deserves with quality dubs and subs if necessary.

FUNIMATION has disrespected Anime with shitty dubs and subs that both violate the spirit of Anime and the Japanese culture in general. We watch Anime because we want to experience how it was meant to be when it was first conceived by the original writers and the directors.

People like Andrew really makes me question why he defines himself among the “otaku” if he is so fanboy as to defend Funinimation? I do not want to get into any stereotypes, but seriously to be an otaku or to refer to them you need to do all us a favor Andrew do not defend a bad company such Funimation. A real otaku cares for authenticity and the real deal, not shitty dubs or subs that censor and sometimes change the original intent that an Anime was supposed to portray.

Clannad Nagisa is the perfect wife?

Certainly Nagisa played the role of the perfect wife in the best possible way she could, even if she was always suffering from her illness that kept her down during long periods of time. I would say that the time she was on her role as a wife during Clannad After Story was one of the most lighthearted moments as we saw her learning the ways of being a wife.

Warning: Spoilers ahead. If you have not watched up to the point on Clannad After Story when Nagisa becomes a wife, it is better you watch it first before reading what follows. It is better to watch this stuff without anyone spoiling it for you.

Alright, with that said we shall continue. When Nagisa became Tomoya’s wife there were many awkward moments like learning to cook and talking about sex that was not so easy for them. That’s why when she became pregnant and Nagisa’s father asked “did you have sex?” in a very innocent way I think and we know that fathers do not want to talk about it.

During her first months of being pregnant she developed a little more accustomed to being a wife and an expecting mother eager to have that baby that she always wished for on her arms. She and Tomoya enjoyed those first months and came up with a few ideas for what the baby name could be. It was a high point on the story seeing everything going so well, but it was not meant to be that way.

Her pregnancy was also full of troubles and most of it she was in bed. Her role of a wife and a soon-to-be mother changed to that of the always fragile Nagisa that had been haunted with the same illness her whole life. Even with her illness she tried to be the wife that Tomaya wanted, always pretending to be strong until the last moment.

When she passed away during the delivery of the baby it was when I broke into tears and those happy moments seemed a distant memory. Nagisa is indeed the perfect wife; in the sense that she was strong to deliver a beautiful baby and having faith on her husband Tomaya to take her to places she had not been and experience so much wonderful experiences that she would have lost otherwise if she just complained about her illness.

***Spoilers Ahead***

At first I was a little skeptical about the movie because of all the bad reviews I had read previously watching this movie on YouTube and some other sites. But after watching the trailer and listening to the original Japanese trailer:

my heart jumped in excitement and went to buy it from Amazon right away. I could have streamed it or some other way but nothing comes closer to watching it on full HD on the big screen on the living room. Anyways, after watching it I was blown away by how awesome this movie was and could not believe that so many people had given it so bad reviews. Continue reading »

Clannad After Story is a sequel to the first Clannad. Everyone graduates and moved on with the lives. Tomoya and Nagisa’s relationship becomes more intimate, more than ever. The story mainly focuses on these two. Are you ready to go emo? Sure you are. Spoilers ahead.

Clannad After Story

Okay, I honestly stopped watching this around Episode 14. I figured that it’s not Clannad without the rest of the guys. That’s what made the first one so damn fun to watch. Sunohara is not around doing stupid things and Tomoyo is not around constantly kicking his ass. The neat side stories about the different characters was a nice touch. Very touchy indeed. This sequel lacks all of that. But yesterday, I decided to finish this one up. Now I regret not finishing it up sooner. Continue reading »
